| My Story as Joe’s Father, Advocate, Historian and Friend
I am Bob Mohs, Joe's father and one of his most proud advocates. Joe's story is really our family's story. Many of the details of his early years come from my memory, family videos, photos, health records, and letters written between Joe's mother and myself when he was receiving therapy at UCLA.
Like all people, Joe does not have a complete memory of the first few years of his life. In a sense, I am the historian. The emotions, actions and reactions to what went on during that time were crucial to the outcome of Joe's recovery from autism. Having had over 20 years since Joe's diagnosis of infantile autism to reflect on all that has occurred, I feel I am able to provide insights to what may be ahead for parents who have an autistic child. Perhaps, through the speeches Joe and I will give and the book we are writing together, I will also be able to show that there is hope for these families who want nothing more than for their children to achieve their greatest potential. I know that some children will also recover, as my son has – and I pray that God blesses them on their journey.
I am a practicing dentist. My lovely wife, Leslie, and I live outside of Duluth, Minnesota and our home overlooks the ever-changing beauty of Lake Superior. Joe lives about 15 miles away, so we see him often, as we do our other children. Our family is the most important part of our lives. When we all get together with the children, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and dogs, it’s a wonderful, laughter-filled, chaotic time. We absolutely love it.
I want to thank you for your interest in Joe's recovery, and my family’s story. Joe is, and always will be, a hero to me. And, as his proud father, I invite you to learn more about Living Proof by exploring the stories, photos and resources found on our site. |
